The Civil War was a big war between the southern and northern United States of America. the war was startedbecause of disagreement about slavery and state rights. The problems about slavery and state rights were that the northern states thought that the southern states shouldn't have slaves because the slaves were not treated well and were forced to work against their own free will for free and the southern states thought that they shouldn't have to listen to the northern states and should be ableto make their own laws plus many people said that their businesses couldn't survive without them to do the slaves to do all the work. The southern states seceded { secede means to break away from} from the United States starting with South Carolina in December 1860 and became the Confederate States of America and the northern states became the Union. The leader of the Confederate States of America or the Confederacy was Jefferson Davis who was a former soldier and had been in battle before. The leader of the Union was Abraham Lincoln otherwise known as Honest Abe and had never been in battle his whole life.

The Battle of Fort Sumter
There first battle of the Civil War was the Battle of Fort Sumter. The Battle of Fort Sumter took place near Charleston, South Carolina and was started when the people of South Carolina didn't like that Fort Sumter was controlled by the Union so on April 12-13 1861 in Charleston, South Carolina the Confederacy attacked. Neither side wanted war and the Confederacy thought long and hard about attacking the fort and risking to cause a war but they were forced to because Lincoln ordered to send supplies to the fort and the Confederacy wanted all Union Forts out of their territory so they decided to take down Fort Sumter while it was low on supplies. On April 12 the Confederates open fired on the fort but that did no good so on April 13 he Confederacy brought in the artillery on Fort Johnson and Fort Moultrie and after a while of bombardment the Union garrison in the fort surrendered and evacuated. During the battle one Union artillerist got killed and three were were wounded and one was even mortally wounded. So overall the Confederacy DOMINATED and won the battle. The Civil War has begun!

The First Battle of Bull Run
The First Battle of Bull Run was the first major land battle of the civil war. It was fought on July 21, 1861 and took place near Manassas, Virginia. The Union had about 35,000 troops while the Confederate army had about 34,000 troops. Both armies were not very well trained but were equal in strength. The Union was led by Irvin Mcdowell and the Confederates were led by Joseph E. Johnston. The battle took place very close to the capitol. The Union were trying to attack the Confederates left and right side and man did they fail. The Confederates prevailed. A suprise attack on the Confederates from the right side drove the army back to Henry House Hill. The Union regrouped but at that time the Confederates arrived at Henry House Hill and bagan to regroup. Mcdowell chose an unwise decision by not taking the Henry House Hill and let the Confederates create a defensive line to hold off the Union. When the Union arrived at the House Hill they made a plan to bombard the Confederates with their artillery. Artillery are things like cannons. But when the Union came so did Confederate reinforcements led by Thomas J. Jackson, Wade Hampton, and J.E.B Stuart. The reinforcemants turned the tides of battle and gave the Confederates the upper hand. Colonel Rickett and Griffin of the Union were ordred by Mcdowell to take down the Confederate artillery so the infantry could go attack without harm from cannons. Infantry are soldiers who fight on the ground. The Confederate artillery had the advantage though because the Union artiilery pieces were not very effective against the Confederate's artillery due to them being too close to the enemy so most shots of the Union usually shot over the Confederates. Brigade leader Barnard Bee were low on ammo so he told his men to ready his bayonet and prepare to charge down and attack Jackson's artillery. Brigade is like a group of soldiers. No one knew what happened after Bee told his men to ready his bayonets for he was injured shortly after and it was unknown if the soldiers did as they were told. Artillery commander Griffin sent his artiilery to support the attacks on the hill but were captured by the Confederacy which was also another turning point in the battle and gave the confederates even more power in the battle. Although the Union stiil had more troops they were took down little by little by the Confederates. The Union attacked the Confederates on the hill with just two groups on the battlefield at a time, that was a bad choice because if the Union attacked in larger groups they could have overan the Confederates and win the battle. But as soon as the Union was driven back two more Confederate brigades arrived and crushed colonel Howard's brigade which left only Mcdowell and Gen. Beauregaurd's troops. The Union had lost all hope and began to retreat to Washington. The Confedrates Began to pursuit the Union but were ordered by Jefferson Davis to leave them be. The battle concluded as another Confederate win and so the Civil War goes on.........

The Battle of Gettysburg
The battle of Gettysburg was probably the most important battle in the Civil War and was known as the turning pont in the Civil War puttin it in the Union's favor. The Union had 93,921 troops and were led by George G Meade. The Confederates had 71,699 troops and were led by General Robert E. Lee. The battle took place in Adams County in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on July 1-3, 1863. Though the Confederates were outnumbered they were trained better than the Union in military combat. The North which were the Union had all the factories and money and had all the big cities and towns but lacked in military. The South which are the Confederates had all the barracks where soldiers were trained and had small towns and farms but they lacked in money. Barracks are places where soldiers are trained and lack means your not very good at something or you don't have alot of something. General Buford of the Union held ground on the high elevation of ridges waiting for the main army of the Union to arrive. On the ridges of Gettysburg Buford's cavalry units fought General Heths' battalion, the Union held of for a long time but the main army did not arrive yet and they were eventually driven back to a ridge called Mcpherson Ridge and then finally the main army of the Union arrived led by Meade and the bloody Battle of Gettysburg now begins! Confederate Brigade Generals James J. Archer and Joseph R. Davis attacked the Union's right and left sides but were brought down by Brigade Generals Lysander Cutler and Solomon Meredith, after those minor battles hundreds of Confederate soldiers were already captured by the Union. Early in the battle General Mcreynolds was killed and General Abner Doubleday took over for Reynolds' troops. After Reynolds got killed the Confederates attacked the Union army with about half their men and with great strategy and tactics drove the Union back and also closed them in. Winfield S. Hancock of the Union was assigned by Meade to take charge of the army. The Union retreated and Hancock found a great place for a battle field that gave them the advantage so the Union regrouped there and got ready for battle. Once Lee realized what was happening he told General Ewell to capture Cemetary Hill where Union troops were. The two sides clashed that night and so ends the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg.
The second day of battle began as the whole army bagan to move forward and prepare to fight. That day on July 2, 1863 the Union braced themselves for the Confederate attack, the Union planned to hold their ground and themselves from the Confederates and weaken their forces. The Confederates planned to attack the Union's front line as well as their left and right side all at the same time and hope for it to be enough to overrun the Union. On the attack on the left flank Lee ordered troops to to attack and take the hills on the battlefield. But the Union held on with help from reinforcements and drove the Confederates back. On the attack on the right flank the Confederates were able to take some land but not alot. Even though alot of the Union troops on the right were sent to the left to help defend General Greene and his troops wete able to drive the Confederates back with help from reinforcements of reserve troops. So on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg the Union prevailed and drove off the Confederate attack for that day. The second day of battle ends.
Early on the third day of the Civil War Union Corps attacked the Confederate army with artillery from Cemetary Hill. The Confederacy countered by sending 150 to 170 artillery cannonscand many brigades and also General Picketts entire battalion led by General Longstreet. To fight back, the Union fought back with about 80 cannon and musket fire attacking the charging Confederates. After about 15 minutes of artillery fire the Confederate cannons stopped firing and 25,500 confederate troops charged to the enemy, this was known as Pickett's Charge. Once the Confederates reached the Union the two sides clashed and there was a close battle and that was the closest time the Confederates ever came to get independence from the Union but Union reinforcements came just in time and the remaining troops on Cemetary Hill and the reinforcements drove the Confederate troops away. After the Confederate charge two more battles ocurred when General Stuart fought two brigades of cavalry and a battle on a mountain where soldiers lost all ammunition they had to us their swords and bayonets. So ends the third and last day of battle.
On July 4 1863 the Confederates buried some of their dead andtook their wounded and retreated. The Union pursuited them for a while and both sides left the bloody battlefield with dead bodies scattered everywhere behind them. News of the victory overjoyed the North. But many casualties occured for both sides. For the Union, there were 3,155 killed, 14,531 wounded, and 5,369 captured or missing. For Confederates ther were 4,708 killed, 12,693 wounded, and 5,830 captured or missing. So on November 19 Abraham Lincoln came to Gettysburg said his Gettysburg Address speech and he also ordered people to bury all the remaining dead, Union or Confederate.

Battle of Shiloh
The Battle of Shiloh was from April 6-7, 1862. The battle took place in Hardin County, Tennesee. The Union had 66, 812 troops and the Confederates had 44,699 troops. The Union was led by Ulysses S. Grant and Don Carlos Buell. The Confederates were led by Albert Sidney Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregaurd. Early morning on April 6 the Confederates did a surprise attack on the Union Army. The Union did not prepare properly for the attack and faltered a little. The plan on the assault was for General Polk to attack the left, General Bragg attack the center which are the front lines, and General Hardee attack the right, and last but not least Breckinridge as the reserve unit just in case anyonr needs reinforcements. The Union wanted to go to the Tennesee River where they had supplies and there was the army of Ohio there to help them and the Confederates wanted to prevent that from happening. Hardee and Bragg attacked first but it was hard to break through the enemy. In the surprise many inexperienced soldiers ran to the river for safety but many experienced soldiers fought back but were forced to retreat. Grant's senior general, Sherman got all the men together and told them words of encouragement and Grant himself arrived just healing from an injury he hurried to the battlefield and got men in the battle. Reserve General Wallace took the wrong route to the battlefield and ended up behind the Confederate Army, he had the chance to attack the Confederates from behind but decided to circle around and follow the orders he was given. But when he arrived and found Grant the fighting lasted a long time already and Grant was not very happy. The Hornets Nest was a position held by the men of General Prentiss and Wallace. The position was held for several hours and the Confederates were losing alot of men in trying to take it down but the Nest slowly grew weaker and it was when Wallace was heavily injured was the time when the nest fell apart. But the sacrifice was not for nothing, it gave Grant time a final defense near Pittsburgh Landing. The bad thing for the South was that they lost Johnston in battle and that really made the Confederates sad. So in Johnston's place Beauregaurd took command. Once the Hornets Nest was took down the Confederacy attacked the defensive line of the Union but it was too strong. When the fighting was over for the day Buells troops arrived. So on April 7, 1862 in early morning the Union attacked with everything they had and slowly drove back the Confederates for they were outnumbered. Once Beauregaurd noticed what was happening he took all remaining Confederate men and retreated. The Union had won thanks to Grant, the Union soldiers, and the reinforcements from Bull.
